Chapter 20: Costly Repair

"Get up," I said.

Jonah stayed on one knee at my threshold with the silver cutting into his wrists.

"No."

"You're burning."

"I know."

"Get up, Jonah. You're in front of my whole pack."

"That's why I'm kneeling," he said. "They watched me drag you through this gate. They can watch me come through it the same way."

Four hundred wolves stood along the walls and the steps and did not make a sound.

He got up, but only to walk.

He crossed the threshold with the chain trailing in the dust behind him and the silver hissing against his skin.

He went down the middle of the courtyard on the same path he had used to pull me, from the gate to the steps, past the well and the cage and the rows of wolves who had stoned me.

His shoulders were straight.

His hands shook.

Nobody threw anything.

A girl at the front dropped the stone she had picked up, and it rolled away across the dirt.

He stopped at the bottom of the steps, three below me, where Bree had once stood and cried.

"Alpha of Grimjaw," he said. "I took you in front of your pack and I put you in a cage. I knew my sister had been hurt, and I wanted someone to answer for it. You were the first name I was given."

"You didn't ask any questions."

"I didn't, because I did not want the answers."

I came down one step.

"Why did you come back?"

"You asked me a question in my study, and I never answered it."

"Which one?"
