Chapter 6: Corinne's Room

"A slip of the tongue," Dane said at once.

He had gone from grey to white, and his eleven guards stared at the ground.

"You asked her to take back a rejection and said Bree made a mistake," Jonah said. "I heard it clearly."

"You heard half of it, Alpha Dray. I was trying to find a way to save my pack's good name."

"By blaming a woman who isn't here."

"By being practical."

Jonah looked at him for a long moment.

I could see him itching to put his hands on Dane's throat and see what came out.

But he had a Moot in nine days and nothing in his hands except half a sentence.

"Go home, Locke," he said finally. "Come back in nine days with your proof."

Dane's mouth twisted.

He looked at me one last time, and what was in his face was not rage.

It was panic.

"You'll regret this, Ivy," he said, and he walked to his car with his men close around him.

The engines turned over and the three cars pulled away down the dawn road.

I watched them go with my wrists dragging at the silver.

"He's afraid of something," I said quietly.

"So am I," said Jonah.

He did not explain.

He started to say something else, and then a Venomfang runner came pounding up the hill from the lodge with his shirt open and his face wet.

"Alpha," he gasped. "The healer says come now. It's Corinne."

Jonah went still.

"Her heart," the runner said. "She's going."

Jonah did not wait for the rest.

He ran, and the chain on my wrists went tight, and I ran too or I would have been dragged down the hill on my face.

We pounded through the lodge past a line of silent wolves on the stairs.
