Chapter 9: The First Sitting

The Venomfang hall was a long room of black beams, and by moonrise it held three Alphas and two hundred wolves.

Jonah had put the silver back on my wrists before we came in, and he had not met my eyes when he did it.

"The Accord requires it," he said.

"I know."

"I'll take it off again when this is done."

"You'd better."

I sat on a bench in the front with my chain across my knees.

Two old Alphas sat beside Jonah at the high table, a bald one from the river pack and a stooped one from the north valley.

Neither of them had come for me.

Dane sat at the Grimjaw bench with Bree beside him.

She wore a black dress and no makeup, and her cheeks were red from crying.

She did not look at me once.

"This is the first sitting," the stooped Alpha said. "The Moot's verdict comes at the full moon. Tonight we hear the claims."

Dane stood.

"Grimjaw brings a witness," he said. "My Luna."

I heard the word and felt my wolf's hackles lift.

Bree rose with her hands clasped and walked to the middle of the floor.

Her voice shook.

"I loved Ivy my whole life," she said. "She's my sister. Please, believe me, I never wanted to say this."

The hall went quiet.

"A week before the Moon Fair, she came to me at the kitchen table with her phone. She said she wanted to scare the Venomfang girl so the treaty would fall apart. She told me what to type. I thought it was a game. I thought she only wanted to frighten her."

She sobbed, and two hundred wolves leaned toward her.

"I did not know about the rogues," Bree said. "I swear on my father's grave. I would never have touched that phone."

It was a very good lie.
