Chapter 15: Glass
Three hundred heads turned toward my right hand.
It was bare.
I held it up anyway, fingers spread, so the back row could see.
"There's nothing on it," I said into the microphone Dalton had left on the podium. "I took the ring off on a roof last Wednesday and gave it to his grandmother."
A murmur went through the tables.
"I thought it was glass," I said. "Nobody told me what it was until my boss looked at it under a magnifier."
"How convenient," Lucinda said.
She said it sweetly, and she took one step toward the front of the stage.
"A diamond," she said. "Three carats, an old mine cut, from an estate jeweler. Paid for in cash, sixty-one thousand dollars, in an envelope. And she let us all call it glass for two years, because she knew exactly what it was."
I had never known any such thing.
I opened my mouth to say so.
Dalton heard it before I did.
He turned his head slowly, and I watched him do the sum.
"Lucinda," he said.
"I'm only telling the room what they ought to know."
"An old mine cut. Cash. An envelope." His voice was almost gentle. "I never told Susie what that stone was. I never told Gran. I told every person at my birthday table for two years that it was fifteen dollars."
"Dal."
"You laughed at her, and I let you, because I thought I was protecting her. Now you're standing here calling her a thief."
"I was teasing."
"You were there," he said. "You stood at the counter. You told the jeweler she'd love it, and she'd never know."
