Chapter 8: Three Years

Warrick said nothing to my face.

He opened the car door for Vera, and she got in without looking back.

The two vehicles backed out of the gate in single file.

The Ashfang wolves in the yard drifted off in twos and threes and left the porch light on.

I stood there until the taillights were gone.

My grandmother hadn't seen it.

She had driven home at sundown to feed her hens and sleep in her own bed, and nothing I said had stopped her.

Then I turned to Ronan.

"Study," I said. "Now."

He didn't argue.

His study was a small room full of maps, with a fire already laid and one lamp.

I shut the door behind us, and the sound of it was very loud.

"What did you smell on me three years ago?"

He stood by the cold window with his hands at his sides.

"There was a border fair at the fork road, in the autumn," he said. "Both packs sold cider. You were handing out cups for the clinic."

"I remember."

"You walked past me with a tray, and the air changed." His voice was rough. "Under the mint, under whatever you were drinking, there was silver. Lowry silver. I hadn't smelled it since I was a boy at the old Alpha's table."

"You knew who my mother was."

"I knew your blood was Lowry. I didn't know how. I thought the line was dead."

"You knew," I said.

"I guessed."

"And you said nothing."

"You were Warrick's promised Luna by then, Roxanne. If I'd walked up and told you, he would have known I knew." He shut his eyes. "I told myself it wasn't mine to say."
