Chapter 17: The Fountain at Night

The fountain was lit from below, and the water ran over the founder's bronze coat.

Brock sat on the rim of the basin, in the same gray hoodie, with his elbows on his knees.

There was no crowd, no music, and no phones.

I stopped ten feet from him on the wet stone.

"I told Adrienne I'd come alone," I said. "I did."

"I know. I heard you coming for half a block." He tried to laugh. "I guess you hear me too."

"Yes."

"Then you know I'm not wearing a wire, or hiding a bat, or hiding anyone behind the statue."

"I know."

He looked up at the bronze book.

The lanyard was long gone, but I could still feel exactly where it had bitten my wrists.

"It was my bucket," he said. "The second one. I wanted you to see it coming."

I said nothing.

"I took your glasses. I stepped on them after. You don't remember that part, because the water was in your eyes."
