Chapter 27: Ask Me

He was in the boathouse kitchen with his sleeves pushed up, scrubbing a skillet that was already clean.

I came in without knocking and shut the door.

"Rotterdam," I said.

The skillet stopped.

He put it down in the sink very gently, and turned off the water, and dried his hands on the towel over his shoulder.

He did not pretend not to know what I meant.

"My assistant called you."

"His assistant called the shop. She thought you'd told me."

"I was going to."

"When?"

"When I knew how."

I leaned on the island and folded my arms.

"They offered you twelve months running a harbor authority build. It's the biggest contract of your life."

"It's a contract."

"You turned it down on Thursday."

"Yes."

"Because of me."

"Because I'd have been on the other side of the world again," he said. "I wasn't going to do that to you."

"To me."

"I did it once."

"And you decided that I couldn't live through it twice."

He opened his mouth and shut it.

I watched it land on his face.

It was the look of a man who has just recognized his own handwriting.

"Oh," he said.

"I told you two rules. One was that you decide nothing about my life without me."

"You turned down a year of your life for my sake, and you didn't ask me whether I wanted it."

"I thought."

"You thought, Bram. That's what you do. You think, in the dark, alone, like it's a kindness."
