Chapter 17: Both
Carter shut his bedroom door behind us and stood with his back against it.
"Say it," I said.
"I made Wyatt two promises, and you know both."
He looked at the bed, the wide window, the river lights coming on over the water.
"I kept the first for two years."
"I watched your building from a car on Tuesday nights."
"I paid a man to fix your boiler and never told you."
"The boiler," I said.
"The landlord said it was a miracle."
"It was me."
I laughed, and my voice cracked in the middle.
"And the second one?" I asked.
"The second one I broke in my kitchen with your hand on my face."
"Every time since, I've felt like a man robbing a grave."
"Carter."
"He's the reason you're alive, Calla."
"He's the reason I'm anything at all."
"And I want you so badly I can't see straight."
I crossed the room and stood in front of him.
"Listen to me," I said.
"He said something on that recording."
"You heard it, and I think you didn't hear it."
"I heard it."
"Say it back to me."
His throat moved.
