Chapter 23: Wyatt's Grave
The cemetery sat on a hill in the northeast, and on the first Saturday of April the grass was wet and the daffodils were up.
My brother's stone was small and grey, and I had picked it myself.
SWIRE, WYATT, it said, and two dates, and under them the only line I had been able to afford at twenty-four.
He made everyone laugh.
Carter stopped at the gate.
"Go on," I said.
"I don't know how."
"Neither did I."
I took his scarred hand, and we walked up the gravel path between the rows.
The wind came off the river and smelled of rain.
I was wearing the army-green parka, and he wore the black coat, and our shoulders touched the whole way.
At the stone, I crouched and brushed the wet leaves off the base.
"Hey, Wy," I said.
"I brought him."
Carter did not kneel.
He stood with his hands at his sides and his face turned toward the name.
His jaw worked for a long time.
"Wyatt," he said.
His voice cracked on it, and he stopped, and started again.
