Chapter 10: Ask Him
Geoffrey had been to see his grandmother, and he looked it.
He opened his apartment door at eight with his tie pulled loose and a grey tiredness under his eyes.
"She's all right," he said. "I told her the engagement was a misunderstanding. She cried a little. Then she asked if I'd eaten."
"Did you?"
"No."
I came in and shut the door and didn't take my coat off.
"Candice told me to ask you about the Mustang," I said.
He went very still.
It was the same stillness as in the lecture hall, when Brandon asked his question, and I knew it now.
"What did she say?"
"She said to ask you what you said at the birthday dinner."
He walked to the kitchen and put both hands on the counter and looked at the grey sink.
"I'll tell you," he said. "After the fourteenth."
"Why not now?"
"Because I need one more day of you looking at me the way you did this morning."
My throat closed.
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I have tonight."
"You're hiding something."
"Yes."
He said it flat, without a flinch, and it hurt more than a lie would have.
"Tell me it isn't about me."
"I can't say that."
I took a breath.
"Then I don't know what I'm doing here."
"You're here because you wanted to be," he said, still facing the sink. "That's what I keep asking myself. Why you wanted to be."
"What does that mean?"
He turned around.
"You sent me a message in a lecture hall so your ex would see you looking at another man," he said. "I read it forty times. I'm a very good prop, Miranda. I'm just trying to find out if I'm anything else."
