Chapter 31: Senior Night
I stood in the Ashgrove lobby holding the letter in one hand and my phone in the other.
A girl came in from the rain and stepped around me.
I didn't move.
I took a photo of the letter and sent it to the group chat.
Then the map.
Then a text.
"Six blocks."
Corey answered first.
"SIX BLOCKS???"
Then Crew.
"She can count, Haddix."
Then Corey again.
"I'm going to cry in the weight room. Don't tell anyone."
Then Crew.
"Already told everyone."
Graduation was two weeks later, on a hot Saturday in the stadium.
I sat in the stands between my mother and Corey's mom.
Nobody had planned that.
It had just happened in the line at the gate, and neither of them had moved away.
Corey's father sat at the far end of our row in a sport coat, with an empty seat between him and my mother.
He'd come.
He hadn't said a word to me yet.
Crew's dad sat behind us in the same blue button-down from Christmas, pressed this time.
He had a bottle of water and a program he'd already rolled into a tube.
