Chapter 14: Sigrun's Court
Kaelor looked at her mother for a long moment.
Then he did a thing Ingrith had never seen.
He bowed his head.
"Lady," he said quietly. "Nobody has threatened me in four hundred years. I find I deserve it."
"Good," her mother said.
A bell began to ring somewhere high in the hall, one flat clang after another.
The raven flapped to the window.
"The gate," it said. "Someone has come through the cellar crack at Skarnholt."
Ingrith was already pulling on her dress.
"Who?"
"A woman in a fur-lined gown. She is carrying a black stone, and the dead cannot stop her touching it."
Ingrith's hands went still on the laces.
She knew exactly who it was.
They brought Sigrun into the great hall in front of every gray face.
Two tall guards held her arms.
Her gown was torn and her pinned hair had come down, and her cold blue eyes were still bright with spite.
In her right hand, wrapped in a bloody rag, she held a shard of black ice the length of a dagger.
