Chapter 21: The Winterhall
The Winterhall doors opened for them at noon on the third day.
Ingrith walked in with the crown on her brow and her king at her side.
There was no chain between them now, only her bare hand in his.
Her mother walked behind them on her own feet.
Her father walked at her mother's shoulder, still in his groom's coat, with his eyes on the floor.
Behind them came the oldest cook and the smith's boy, carrying a stack of old leather books.
The Winterhall was a long cold room of black pillars and blue torches.
A hundred Frostland lords sat along the walls in their furs.
At the far end, on a high seat of white bone, sat Hrodmar.
His right arm hung black and dead at his side.
His left hand rested on a table in front of him.
On the table stood a cage of iron bars.
