Chapter 24: Two Crowns
They ran the long stair together, barefoot, in whatever clothes they had found.
The dead lined the corridors in rows and bowed as the king and queen went past.
Ingrith did not slow down.
The grove was bright when they reached it.
It was so bright she had to shield her eyes.
Silver light poured from every branch, and the cavern smelled of rain.
The three dead branches had come green again, with leaves like pale coins.
And above them, on the crown of the tree, a ninth branch had grown.
It was slender and white, hung with blossoms the color of snow.
Petals drifted down in the still air, and where they touched the roots, the black frost melted away.
Ingrith stood with her mouth open.
"It has never done that," the raven said, hopping along a root. "Not in seven hundred years. Not for any queen."
"Why now?" Kaelor said, very quietly.
"A queen gave her blood freely. A king gave his years freely. Two hands, one tree."
