Carolyn had put my place card at the head table, on her right hand.
It said L. HART in gold ink, and she had turned it so the whole ballroom could read it.
I sat down, because she had asked me to sit, and I had come to do exactly what she asked.
Four hundred donors in black tie filled gold chairs under a ceiling of chandeliers.
Roland sat on his wife's left with his collar tight and his signet ring turning on his finger.
Amanda's chair was empty, with her card face down on the cloth.
"Smile, dear," Carolyn said, and laid her hand on my sleeve under the table. "They're all looking at the quiet donor."
"I'm smiling."
"You look like a man at a funeral."
"I'm at yours," I said.
Her fingers stayed exactly where they were.
