Chapter 4: The Lanyard

"Judge," I said. "Give me a minute with her first."

My sister looked at me and then at the man in the camel coat.

"One minute," she said. "Then I start."

I touched Amanda's elbow.

She let me walk her three steps to the security desk, because there were a hundred people in the lobby and she hated being watched.

"What is this?" Amanda said under her breath. "Are you making a scene?"

"No. I'm giving you one warning, and then I'm done."

"Leo."

"Ask him about Dayton."

She blinked. "What's Dayton?"

"Ask him why he left Ohio. Ask him what happened to the trust account."

Amanda's face did something I knew well. It closed.

"You're jealous," she said. "It's pathetic."

"I'm not jealous. I'm telling you to ask."

"My father vetted him. He came with the best references."

"Then it'll be a short question."

She pulled her elbow out of my hand and walked back across the marble without looking at me.

I watched her walk away.

Judge was waiting, with her folder open.

"Counsel," she said, and she said it to the whole room. "Do you want to tell us about the Supreme Court of Ohio, or shall I?"

The man in the camel coat laughed. It was almost good.

"I think there's been a misunderstanding."

"I think there's been a suspension," Judge said. "Two years, from the Ohio bar, for taking eighty-seven thousand four hundred dollars out of a widow's trust account in Dayton."

People in the lobby had stopped walking.

A woman with a briefcase moved closer to hear.

"The name on the order isn't the name on your card," Judge went on. "You dropped a surname and a middle name. Smart. Then on page three of the application I signed, in your own handwriting, you wrote 'no disciplinary history.'"
