Chapter 16: Tuesday Supper
By six on Tuesday, thirty people were standing in the diner holding aprons and opinions.
Mabry had a stopwatch around her neck and a whistle in her teeth.
"Eleven dishes," she said around the whistle. "One hour. We rehearse the whole feast except the pudding."
"Why not the pudding?" asked the green parka.
"Because Ansel says it isn't time."
Every head turned to the stool at the end of the pass.
Ansel sat there in his cardigan with his wooden spoon across his knees, and gave no sign he had heard.
The room was a good kind of loud.
The Methodists had brought their oven's worth of rolls in a laundry basket.
The Lutherans had brought a grievance about it.
"Rolls proof twice," said a Lutheran woman in a snowman sweater.
"Rolls proof once and then you leave them alone," said the Methodist who had baked them.
"My mother proofed twice."
"Your mother burned the Easter ham."
"That was one year!"
Ansel rapped the spoon on the stockpot once.
