Chapter 19: Come Back

Dalton's POV

I had promised her I would stay at the elevator.

I kept that promise for as long as I could.

I kept it through the whole of Gilbert's speech, which I heard because I'm a wolf and the hall was quiet.

I kept it while he said the word "wife" and the word "love" in the same breath.

I kept it while she told him no, and I was so proud of her I couldn't swallow.

Then I heard his skin on her skin.

I heard her say "Let go," and her pulse jump.

My promise went out of my head.

I hit the stairwell door with my shoulder, and it hit the wall, and the plaster cracked.

I don't remember the ten yards.

I remember Gilbert's face turning toward me, and the way it emptied.

I remember my hand closing in the front of his shirt.

I lifted him off the floor and slammed him against the wall.

The window rattled.

He hung there with his heels kicking, gripping my wrist with both hands.

"Dalton," he gasped.

I heard my own voice answer, and it wasn't a man's.

"You touched her."

"I didn't... I wasn't..."

"She said let go."

My wolf was rising in my chest and I let it.

I felt my jaw ache and my nails thicken, and the edges of my vision went amber.

Every instinct I owned told me to finish it.

Six years of mornings and tea.

Six years of her sleeping in his bed while I sat in a truck on the Alder Creek line.
