Chapter 9: Fever

"You stay at the gate," I told Dalton.

We were three hours south of the lodge in the dark, and he had driven the whole way a little over the speed limit.

"Della."

"If the old man sees an Alpha at his door, he'll call it an invasion. He'll tell the council I brought a rival's wolf into the pack's house, and that's my whole petition gone."

"You told me I don't decide for you."

"I did."

"So I'll wait at the gate," he said, and his hands were tight on the wheel. "Until you say otherwise."

I got out.

The Thatcher house sat behind its iron gates at the end of a long drive lined with maples.

I had come through those gates for six years and never thought twice about them.

Two of the old man's guards stood at the front steps.

One of them held up a hand.

"Mrs. Thatcher, it's late."

"My son has a fever of a hundred and four."

"The nursery is handling it."

"The nursery," I said. "Is there a doctor?"

"The Alpha says it's moon-fever, and a doctor isn't needed."

"Move," I said.

"I can't."

I took a step forward.

He put his chest in my way, and that was when a voice spoke behind me, calm and unhurried.

"Let her pass."

I hadn't heard the truck door.

I hadn't heard him cross the lawn.

Dalton stood two paces behind my shoulder with his hands loose and his eyes gold in the porch light.

The air around him had thickened.

It pressed on my skin, and I felt it press on the two men in front of us, and they both took a step back without knowing they had.
