Chapter 2: Marked

Nerys and the Alpha King give in to the mate pull and he marks her in his tent. At dawn she walks to the Stone in a plain white dress and finds her sister standing at his side, hand on her belly.

I should have run.

Every year at Highcrest they told us that a mate pull was a weakness an enemy could use, and I had believed them.

Then Hadrian stepped out of the trees and crossed the space between us in three strides, and I stopped believing anything.

"You felt it," he said.

"Yes."

"Say it."

"You're my mate."

His hands came up to my face, and they shook.

I grabbed the front of his coat and pulled him down.

The first kiss was not gentle.

His mouth was hot and hard on mine, and he made a low sound in his chest that went straight through me.

Rue howled inside my head.

He backed me against a tree, and the bark scraped my shoulders through the thin ivory dress.

"Not here," he said against my mouth.

"Then where?"

He took my hand and walked me out of the torchlight, past the last of the tents.

A pavilion of dark canvas stood there with two guards at the flap.

He looked at them once.

They turned their backs.

Inside, the air smelled of cedar and cold iron.

I noticed that the scent I had followed through the trees was gone.

I told myself that was what close meant, and I stopped noticing.

"I never asked your name," he said.

"Nerys Lowther."

Something crossed his face and was gone before I could read it.

"Ashmere's elder daughter," he said. "First overall."

"You've heard of me."

"I'm about to hear a lot more."

He lifted me off my feet and I locked my legs around his waist.

We went down onto the furs together, and the dress tore at the seam.

I didn't care.

I got his coat off his shoulders, then his shirt.

I put my palms flat on his chest and felt his heart slamming under them.

He pulled the ruined dress down to my waist and put his mouth on my breast.

I arched up into him and said his name.

"Again," he said, and bit lightly, and I said it again.

His hand slid up my thigh and found me wet.

"Gods," he said. "Look at you."

He circled my clit with two fingers, slow, then fast.

I clawed the furs and begged him in words I had never said aloud.

"Please. Hadrian. Now."

He took his time anyway.

He worked me over his fingers until my thighs shook.

When I came, the cry ripped out of me, and the guards must have heard it.

I wasn't ashamed.

I rolled him onto his back before he could say a word.

At Highcrest nobody had ever pinned me, and I wasn't going to start now.

His eyes went wide and gold, and then he grinned.

"First overall," he said.

"Shut up."

I pushed his trousers down and took his cock in my hand.

He was thick and heavy and already leaking, and he swore at the ceiling when I stroked him.

I lowered myself onto him an inch at a time.

He filled me so completely that I had to stop and breathe.

His hands clamped on my hips.

"Move," he said. "Nerys, move."

I rode him.

I started slow, and then I wasn't slow anymore.

The furs slid under his shoulders, and the whole pavilion shook with us.

He sat up and wrapped an arm around my back, and the new angle hit something inside me that made my vision white.

"Mine," he said into my throat.

"Yours."

He flipped us.

He drove into me with his weight over me, hard enough that I had to hold the tent pole above my head.

I came again, clenching around him, and he followed with a shout and his face pressed against my neck.

Then his teeth closed.

The bite went in deep, and fire ran from my neck to my toes.

I screamed.

Rue screamed with me, and then, slowly, the burning settled into a heavy, humming warmth.

He licked the wound clean and lay across me, breathing hard.

"It's done," he said.

I touched the mark.

It was still hot under my fingers.

"At dawn the whole Gathering hears it," he said. "I want every pack in the realm to know who you belong to."

I fell asleep with his arm across my ribs.

A horn woke me.

It was gray outside, and his side of the furs was empty and cold.

A guard stood at the flap with a folded dress.

"Alpha Hadrian asks that you wear this to the Stone, my lady."

It was white and plain, and it laced up the back.

I put it on and pinned my hair up with my mother's silver pin.

Then I walked out into the cold morning with the mark burning on my neck.

Every pack in the realm was gathered around the standing stones.

Hadrian stood at the center in his black coat.

Cecily stood beside him with one hand spread over her belly.

My mother and father stood behind her.

None of them looked at me.
