Chapter 21: Wrong Number

It rang twice in my ear, and nothing happened.

Then something buzzed against the wood of the stage.

It was a hard, angry rattle, and I held the microphone out toward the little cream clutch under Noelle's arm.

The sound went through the whole lobby.

Four hundred people heard a phone shake inside her bag.

"That's my work phone," Noelle said.

"Which one?"

"Tala, this is absurd."

"Then answer it."

The phone buzzed again and again.

She did not move.

Her hand stayed flat on the clutch, and for the first time that night she was holding something she couldn't smile around.

"That number sent me a text in March," I said. "It said, 'Don't be late, I'll wear the blue.' I dialed it every day for five months and it was always off. Tonight it isn't."

"It could have been stolen from my..."

"The line is billed to the company as 'Events,'" said a deep voice from the back of the lobby.

The head of security had stepped away from the sound desk.

"It was opened under the executive admin login," he said. "Mr. Alcantara had no knowledge of it. Neither did the CFO. The police have the file as of an hour ago."

He nodded, and the big screen above the bar lit up.

It was meant for the anniversary slideshow.

Now it showed a gold lobby, a woman in a green coat, a man kneeling beside her.

At the edge of the frame, behind a plant, stood another woman with a phone held up in front of her face.
