Chapter 30: The Key
"I used the key," Lourdes said. "I did not wish to wake the house."
"It's six forty in the morning."
"I am a person who rises."
She set the cardboard box on the counter between us, very gently.
"I used the small room off the hall. This was in the bin."
I held the lapels of my robe together.
Behind me I heard Angelo's bare feet on the stairs, and then his hand settled on the newel post.
"Whose is it?" said his mother.
"Mine."
She didn't ask me twice.
She looked at my face, and then at my stomach.
Then she sat down at the kitchen table all at once.
I had never seen her sit without choosing to.
"How many weeks?"
"About six."
"Who knows?"
"Angelo. Dessa."
"Not the bakery?"
"No."
"Not my younger son."
"No."
She nodded slowly, and her mouth moved, and I thought for a moment she would say something that wasn't an order.
Then she stood up.
"You will give notice at the bakery today."
