Chapter 33: Not Asking
Angelo was still at the kitchen table when I got home at dawn.
He wore yesterday's shirt, and the phone sat in front of him with the screen dark.
"Tomas didn't drink," I said.
He shut his eyes.
"Thank God."
"Your mother put the bottle in his coat herself. To see if he would."
"I'll deal with her."
"Angelo."
I took off my coat and sat down across from him.
"She told me something else. She said you paid a driver to take her to the airport on Tuesday."
He didn't answer for a while.
Then he reached into his shirt pocket and put two pieces of paper on the table.
They were the halves of a torn check.
"Two hundred thousand dollars," he said. "I wrote it at my desk on Tuesday morning, and a car took it to the hotel."
"And?"
"She tore it down the middle and handed it back to the driver."
"Did you go with it?"
"No."
"Did you call her?"
"No."
"Did you ask her one thing? Why she came, or why she left, or what she wanted?"
"I knew what she wanted."
"Did you?"
His mouth tightened.
"You did it again," I said.
"Tala."
"In March you saw a picture, and you didn't ask me. You packed a bag."
He didn't move.
"Now you hear your mother's voice, and you don't ask her. You write a number."
"It's not the same."
"It's the same hand."
He looked at the two halves of the check.
"That's what I did to you," he said.
"Yes."
"I know."
He opened his mouth.
I waited, with my hands flat on the table, and I watched him try.
