Chapter 7: The Folder Named March

I didn't ask Dessa what she meant.

I already knew what she meant, and I couldn't make my mouth say it.

"I'll make some calls," Dessa said slowly. "Quietly. Do you want me to?"

"Not yet."

"Tala."

"Not yet. I need to see something first."

Angelo went out for groceries at noon, saying he'd be forty minutes.

Dessa fell asleep in the upstairs room with her scrubs still on.

I took the crutches and went down the hall to his study.

I had never gone through his things in four years of marriage.

I told myself I only wanted a pen.

His laptop sat open on the desk, and when I touched the trackpad the screen woke.

A folder lay open in the middle of it.

The folder was named March.

My hand went cold.

Inside were three files, a photograph, a screenshot and a note.

I clicked the photograph first.

It was a lobby, dim and gold, with a long bar behind a pillar.

A woman in a green coat sat on a velvet chair with her face in her hands.

A man knelt beside her with both arms around her shoulders.

I knew the coat.

I knew the hands in the green sleeves.

It was me.

The man was Tomas.

It had been taken from across the room, through the leaves of a plant.

His face was turned toward my hair and mine was hidden.

The whole thing looked like a kiss.

I opened the screenshot.

It was a text thread, with one sender saved as a single letter.
