Chapter 17: The Night Run
That night I knocked on the door of his office, and he opened it with a pen in his teeth.
He took the pen out.
"Question ten," I said.
"That's a lot of questions," said Nolan.
"You said nine days," I said, "and you never said nine questions.
"Will you run with me?"
He looked at me for a long moment.
"That's not a question about me."
"It's a question about whether you're free."
"I'm free," said Nolan.
"Get your coat."
We went out the back of the lodge into a night as clear as glass.
The moon was nearly full, a few nights off, and the snow on the ridge gave back its light.
I took off my boots at the tree line and my jacket after.
I hadn't shifted in two years until the night of the ice.
My wolf had come back then, and I still wasn't sure she would stay.
