Chapter 6: Rain And The Red Car

Odette looked away first.

She pulled her silver back over herself, smiled at the pack, and bent to say something to the nearest wolf.

The light came back, steady.

"Did you see that?" I whispered.

"I saw," Finlay said. His hand tightened on my elbow. "Not here. Come with me."

He led me out of the courtyard, around the side of the house and across the gravel to where his car sat under the pines.

It was a low red thing he had bought with his first Alpha's pay, and he had never let me drive it.

He opened the driver's door and stood aside.

"Get in," he said.

"You hate when anyone drives it."

"Get in, Linnea."

I got in.

The leather was cool against my bare legs. The dash lit up red when he pushed the button, and he folded himself into the passenger seat.

"Drive," he said. "Anywhere that isn't here."

I drove.

I took the old logging road up into the pines, with the wipers going, until the pack house lights were gone behind us and the trees closed in on both sides.

At a wide spot above the creek I put the car in park and shut off the engine.

The rain was loud on the roof.

We sat in the quiet and it was thick.

"She's scared," I said. "Odette. Her light went out."

"Yes."

"I stopped the tea this morning and her light went out tonight."

"I noticed." He turned in the seat to face me. "I don't know what it means. But I'm going to find out."

I looked at his hands on his thighs.

For two days, I had thought about the bond as a law, or a weight, or a problem for the Council.

I hadn't thought about the fact that I wanted him so much my skin hurt.
