Chapter 18: The Board Seat
The Tattnall Harbor Group occupied the top two floors of a glass tower on Bay Street, and the boardroom had one long wall that looked at the river.
Sullivan walked in at eight exactly, in a charcoal suit, with me beside him.
"She's with me," he told the receptionist.
Seven directors sat around a table the length of a bowling lane.
Lavinia sat at its head in black, with a silver folder squared in front of her.
She smiled when she saw me.
"Gentlemen, Mr. Tattnall has brought a guest." She tilted her head. "His bartender."
Two of the directors looked at their pens.
"Jolene Candler," I said, and sat in the chair against the wall. "I'll be quiet."
"No one believes that," Lavinia said, and a man laughed because he thought he had to.
Sullivan did not sit.
He stood at his usual place, his hands resting on the back of the chair, and looked at every face in turn.
"Mother has an item," he said. "Let's have it."
