Chapter 15: Can't Read

Marianne got out of the car and walked straight across the street to the sedan.

The lawyer rolled down his window with a tight smile.

"Ms. Thurlow. I was about to ring the bell."

"For whom?"

"For Dr. Ellerker." He held up a long white envelope. "My client asked me to deliver this in person."

Dr. Ellerker had come up beside her, and he took the envelope with two fingers.

He read the first page standing there on the sidewalk.

"It says I'll be sued for slander," he said, "if I repeat one word about Corbin Thurlow."

"Your client," Marianne said. "Is that Corbin, or is it me?"

The lawyer's smile twitched.

"I'm his counsel," he said. "I'd remember that, if I were you."

"I'll be finding a new lawyer for the firm," she said. "Starting tonight."

She took the letter out of Dr. Ellerker's hand, folded it once, and put it in her bag.

"We'll see you in court," she said, and turned her back.

The lawyer started his engine and drove off without another word.

The next morning the detective called while Marianne was pouring coffee.

"Garner's lawyer sent me something," she said. "I'd like you in the room when I read it to him."

The interview room was the same bare box with the steel table.

Garner came in with a guard on each arm.
