Chapter 7: The Recording

The morgue was in the basement of the hospital that had thrown me out.

I followed my sister down the hall because I had no choice.

She walked in front of me with her back straight and her hands shaking at her sides.

Corbin came behind her.

He had a bruise on his cheek the shape of her palm.

He had not said a word since the apartment.

An attendant rolled a steel table into the cold white room and pulled back the sheet to my shoulders.

Marianne looked at the table and did not look away.

The door opened behind us.

Dr. Ellerker came in still wearing his white coat.

He stopped three steps inside.

He looked at the table, and the color left his face so completely that I thought he might fall.

"I told you he wasn't sick," Marianne said. She did not turn around. "Look at him."

"Marianne."

"Look at him, Doctor."

"I have looked," Dr. Ellerker said.

His voice was nothing at all, a breath with words in it.

He walked up to the table and put one hand flat on the steel beside my head.

I stood across from him.

I could have counted the gray in his hair.

"He came to me on the first day, and he had acute leukemia," he said.

"I wrote it down. I did the blood count myself."

Marianne's head turned slowly.
