Chapter 16: Margot's POV: The Board Room
Margot's POV
The boardroom of Southwell Harbor Group is on the fourteenth floor, with a glass wall that looks down on the water.
I had sat at that table for six years.
On Thursday morning I walked in with a tattooed man in a grey suit, and thirteen directors stopped talking.
Declan did not sit at the table.
He took the chair against the wall behind mine, with his hands on his knees.
I had asked him to come, and he had said yes without a single question.
I noticed that, and I held it close.
My father sat at the head of the table with his fingers folded.
Broderick sat at his right hand with a leather folder, perfectly at ease.
"Thank you for coming on short notice," my father said. "Broderick."
Broderick stood.
"This board has a matter of conduct before it," he said. "Three years ago Ms. Southwell entered a marriage of convenience with a man with a criminal record. She did it to conceal a family connection from the chairman, which she has concealed since. Her shares have now been transferred to the family trust on her own signature, which ends her standing here. This vote is a formality."
He slid a page along the table.
It was my signature.
It was a very good copy of my signature.
"I didn't sign that," I said.
"Notarized," said Broderick.
"I didn't sign that."
"Then you'll have to say so under oath, Ms. Southwell, in a courtroom, with your marriage and your husband's record read into the transcript."
