Chapter 11: Read Aloud
Delaney's POV
Leland waited until the plates were cleared.
He waited until the chairwoman had her tea and her interpreter had set his napkin down.
Then he put the manila folder on the white tablecloth and opened it with two fingers.
"I hate to spoil such a lovely evening," he said. "But family is family, and I think our guest deserves to know what she's being asked to sign."
Weston did not move.
Under the table, I put my hand flat on my own knee to keep it still.
I knew what was in that folder before I saw the staple.
"This came across my desk," Leland said. "A personal appearance agreement, three pages, signed by my nephew and by Miss Cross. Anything printed on our floor lands in the compliance archive, and I sit on the compliance committee."
He turned the page toward the interpreter.
"Would you read clause seven for Madam? I wouldn't want to mistranslate it."
The interpreter looked at the chairwoman.
She gave the smallest nod.
He read it in English first, in a neutral voice, and then in Chinese.
"Neither party develops, expresses or acts on romantic feelings for the other. This is a business arrangement."
Nobody at the table spoke.
Marissa was staring at her wine glass.
I felt the room turn toward me, every face on it, and the heat go up my neck.
"I'm so sorry, Delaney," Leland said, with real sadness in his voice. "Truly. But she is asking to put her family's name next to his, and a woman in her position should know it's a performance."
I put down my fork.
