Chapter 18: The Dress

Delaney's POV

Hannah arrived at nine on Friday night with a garment bag, two paper sacks of dumplings and her cardigan on inside out.

"Don't talk to me," she said, pushing past Weston in the front hall. "I've been Leland's problem for eleven hours, and I am carrying evidence."

"In the dumplings?" Weston asked.

"In my left shoe."

She sat on the penthouse floor, took off her sneaker, and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

It was a building security log, with a column of times.

"Leland's assistant came to me at lunch," she said. "He cried in the supply closet. He's been told to bring a forged page to the gala, and he doesn't want to go to prison for a man who calls him by the wrong first name."

I knelt beside her.

"He'll testify?"

"He'll hand over the original template, the one with the March date, and the file where Leland typed it. He wants a lawyer."

"He gets one," I said. "Me."

"I told him you'd say that."

She grinned up at me with her freckles and her sleepy eyes, and I put my arms around her, sneaker and all.

"Okay," Hannah said into my shoulder. "Okay. You're welcome. Can we eat?"

We ate on the floor of the living room with the city behind the glass.

Weston sat cross-legged in his shirtsleeves with a carton in one hand and chopsticks in the other, and I realized I had never seen him eat sitting down.
