Chapter 21: Torn Up
Weston's POV
I had carried the contract in my inside pocket since the night we signed it.
I had not decided to.
It was three pages, folded in thirds, soft at the creases from being touched, and the second agreement on the chairwoman's cream stationery was folded inside it.
I took them out in front of four hundred people and walked to her table.
Delaney came with me.
She did not take my arm.
She walked at my shoulder, in red, with her head up, and I would have followed her into any room in the world.
The chairwoman sat with her hands folded on the cloth.
Her interpreter stood at her left, and the chandelier laid pale light on her silver hair.
She said something to him, short and dry.
"Madam asks you to read her clause seven," he said. "Aloud. As your uncle did."
I looked at the page.
Neither party develops, expresses or acts on romantic feelings for the other.
It was in her plain office typeface, stapled by her own hand, the evening I knew I was already in love with her.
"I won't," I said.
The interpreter blinked.
"It isn't true anymore. It was never true on my side. It was a lie I agreed to because I would rather have her three months pretending than not at all."
Behind me I heard Delaney draw a breath.
"I broke it in the first hour," I said. "At dinner, with a camera on us. I told the room it was acting. It was the only time I have ever used a camera to say what I meant."
