Chapter 22: The Pit
The Pit was colder in the hour before dawn than I remembered.
Rhain went down the spiral stair ahead of me with a lantern, and Hesper walked between two soldiers behind him.
She did not hold the rail.
She looked about the round stone hall as she might look at a room she had decorated.
"Third on the left," she said. "It still has a good view of the drain."
The cell was the one I had slept in with a molten lock under my palm.
Rhain opened it himself.
"You asked for the Pit," he said. "You asked for me."
"I did."
He turned his back on her and hung the lantern on its hook.
"Do it, Aldric," said Hesper softly, from the cell. "I raised you to."
"I know."
"You are very good at it. Thirty-one, and you tied every knot yourself."
"You owe me this one."
Her voice had changed, I thought.
It was no longer the cathedral voice, but something close and eager that I had never heard from her.
