Chapter 22: Amos
Amos's POV
The family came on Thursday.
By nine that night they were all in motel rooms in Missoula, and the Arvidson house was empty and quiet.
I sat on the porch steps with my elbows on my knees.
I had been there an hour.
There was no moon yet, and the river pasture lay black and long under the stars.
Tomorrow at noon the lawyer would come up the drive with the deed in a folder.
Tomorrow by supper she would have a pen in her hand and forty people watching.
I knew what she would write.
I had known it for a month, and I had not once let myself believe it.
The screen door opened behind me.
Karin sat down on the step beside me, in an old sweater, with her feet bare and her hair loose.
"You're brooding again," she said.
"Yes."
"Tell me."
I looked at my hands.
"Tell me, Amos. Not the cleaned-up one."
I breathed in.
"If you write my name tomorrow," I said, "you write it the day the ranch comes to you."
"Your father's dead," I said. "Your mother's dead. I'm the man who's been here your whole life."
"And?"
"And I can't tell if I'm what you want, or the last piece of this place you can hold on to."
She didn't answer right away.
A whippoorwill started up in the cottonwoods.
"Do you think I'm that stupid?"
"I think you're twenty-four, and you've buried your father."
"I'm twenty-four for three more hours," she said.
She took my hand and turned it over.
"Come upstairs."
"Karin," I said.
"Don't argue. It's the last night anybody calls you my trustee. Come upstairs."
