Chapter 22: String Lights

By dark the whole valley knew, and by nine our own barn was full of people who wanted to shake our hands.

The yearlings sold for more than any Standifer horse had in ten years.

The man in the good hat bought both, and then he put his card in my pocket and asked if the bay stallion took outside mares.

I said I'd have to check the book.

He laughed and said he'd heard it was a good one.

By midnight the buyers had gone home, and the hands had strung a line of little yellow lights down the length of the barn aisle and carried the radio out from the bunkhouse.

The cook had left a pie on the tack room bench.

She'd left a note under it.

It said: Eat. Both of you. Quietly.

The last of the hands tipped his hat to me and left.

Then the barn was empty, and the lights swayed over the straw, and the radio played something slow and old.

Ward stood at the far end of the aisle with his hat in his hand.

"Dance with me," I said.

"I don't dance."

"You'll learn."

I crossed the aisle, put his hat on the post, and laid my head against his chest.

He put his arms around me.

We turned slowly in the straw under the string lights.

The grey mare put her head over her door to watch.

"You were something today," he said into my hair.

"So were you."

"I just stood there."
