Chapter 21: Vacated
I wore the black dress again, because I owned nothing else, and I took the stairs of the county courthouse two at a time.
The courtroom was the same one.
The same bench, the same flag, the same brown table where I'd sat four and a half years ago in a borrowed blouse.
I had not been inside it since the day they read my sentence.
My feet knew the way before I did.
The prosecutor stood first.
She was a young woman with a stack of folders, and she didn't look at me until she had finished the first sentence.
"The state has reviewed the ledger, the signed statement of Constance Thorsby, and the bank records," she said.
"The state joins the defendant's motion in full."
"On what ground?" the judge asked.
"That the conviction rested on evidence that was planted, Your Honor, and on a witness who has now admitted it."
The judge was an older man with a heavy face, and he had presided over my trial.
