Chapter 22: What He Pays
The Foundation's board asked me to attend the meeting where Christian resigned.
They sat at a long table in a room with portraits of the Thorsby family on three walls.
I sat at the foot of it in a gray suit I had bought myself.
Christian stood at the head, holding a single sheet of paper.
"I'm resigning as chief executive of Thorsby Marine Supply, effective today," he said. "I'm selling my shares to cover what the company owes this Foundation."
The board chairman set down his pen.
"Christian. The debt was your father's. And your mother took it. You didn't."
"I signed the paper that kept it hidden."
"You were lied to."
"I was lied to by people I never questioned."
Christian slid a check across the table.
"Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars, and the interest from the day it left."
"The house on Harbor Lane is sold, and the rest goes to a fund for people the Foundation put out of work."
