Chapter 23: Bee Under the Porch Light

The housekeeper took Poppy for a sleepover on Saturday, and I was the one who asked.

I drove to the marine docks after dark with the key on the seat beside me.

The yard office was a low gray building with a staircase bolted to the outside wall.

A single bare bulb burned over the top step.

It was the only light on the whole dock.

I climbed up and stood there with the key in my hand, and I looked at that bulb for a long time.

A bee under a porch light.

The door opened before I could use the key.

Christian stood in the doorway in a gray T-shirt, with a dish towel over his shoulder and his hair wet from a shower.

"I heard the car," he said. "I wasn't sure."

"You left the light on."

"Every night since Saturday." He shrugged, helpless. "I didn't know what else to do with it."

I walked past him into one room with a bed, a table, and a hot plate with a kettle on it.

He closed the door.

I turned around and faced him, and I said it plainly.

"I said not until I say."

His face went still.

"I'm saying."

"Willa."

"I'm not saying I've forgiven all of it."

"I'm saying I choose you. Both of you."

"The one who signed it and the one who was driving to me."
