Chapter 4: Fishtown

Tanya was sitting on my kitchen counter at nine the next morning, eating my cereal out of the box.

"You have a key I forgot I gave you," I said.

"You went missing for two nights. I'm a nurse. I check on missing people." She pointed the box at me. "Why are you walking like that?"

"Like what?"

"Like somebody finally did it right."

My face went hot, and she screamed.

She actually screamed, and the upstairs neighbor banged on the floor.

"Who? Where? Is he a real person?"

"He owns a private club," I said. "It's complicated. I'm not allowed to tell you where."

"I don't need an address. I need adjectives."

I thought about it.

"Patient," I said. "Big hands. He talks very quietly and everyone listens."

Tanya put the cereal down.

"Joss Marden," she said slowly. "You're glowing."

I sat down at the table with the black notebook he had given me.

I had been trying to draw his face since six that morning.

I had the jaw and the grey at his temples, and I had the mouth.

I couldn't do the eyes.

Every time I started them, I remembered how he'd looked at me when I came, and my pencil stopped.

"Is that him?" Tanya leaned over my shoulder. "He's hot, even without eyes."

"I know."

"You've been drawing hands for a year, and the first time you're brave enough to draw a face, you're blushing like a teenager." She hugged my neck from behind. "Good. I like him already."

My phone buzzed on the table.

It was a text from Sheldon.
