Chapter 7: Brunch
Abram had put the toy in my hand himself, in a small black box, before I left on Saturday.
"Wear it Sunday," he said. "I won't touch you. I don't touch you outside these walls, and I keep my rules."
"Then how..."
"There's an app."
I had stared at him, and he had looked back, perfectly serious, and it was the closest I'd seen him come to a smile.
So on Sunday I sat in a sunny corner booth of a brunch place on Frankford Avenue in my best blue sweater, with Tanya across from me and a small silicone egg inside me, feeling every nerve in my body listen.
"You're doing the face," Tanya said.
"What face?"
"The one where you're listening to something nobody else can hear."
"I'm not."
Her fork stopped halfway to her mouth.
"Joss. Is there a man in this room making you do something?"
I didn't answer.
Across the restaurant, at a table by the window, Abram sat alone with coffee and a newspaper he wasn't reading.
His dark eyes were on me over the top of it.
He didn't wave.
He turned his phone over in his hand, and the egg inside me hummed to life.
It was a slow, low pulse, and my whole spine went tight.
Tanya turned and saw him.
She turned back with her eyes enormous.
"That's him," she mouthed.
I nodded, and the pulse climbed.
I gripped the edge of the table.
"I'm going to kill you," Tanya whispered, delighted. "I'm going to kill you, and then I'm going to buy that man a drink."
The pulse dropped away, and rose again, and I pressed my knees together under the table.
