Chapter 17: Glenda's Check
Willa's POV
Glenda came at ten exactly, in a navy coat with no pearls.
I noticed the pearls first, because I had never seen her without them.
She sat on the edge of Knox's couch with her purse on her knees, and she refused the tea he offered.
Knox went downstairs to the street, as he had promised, and the door clicked shut.
"I rehearsed this in the car," Glenda said. "I've thrown it out."
"Then say it badly," I said. "I'd rather hear it badly."
She almost smiled.
"I told you on your own doorstep to be generous to a widow."
"You did."
"I'd sat at your engagement dinner and watched my son warm your milk. I thought, how sweet. I never asked you if you liked it. I only asked whether Nicolette would approve."
"Why Nicolette?"
"Because I was in love with her story." She looked at her hands. "A pretty girl who lost her mother young and needed looking after. I'd wanted a daughter like that for years. I got you, and you didn't need anything, and I held that against you."
I had not expected it to land the way it did.
My eyes stung.
"I need you to hear this part," Glenda said. "I didn't believe you on your doorstep. I didn't believe you at my table. I believed a woman who cried over a woman who was telling the truth, and I did that for three years."
"You did."
"I won't ask you to forgive me."
"Good," I said. "I'm not ready."
"I know."
She opened her purse and took out a long envelope.
"The caterer's deposit was nine thousand dollars," she said. "I paid it, and I've written to the caterer to waive the rest. The check inside is what they refunded, and it's yours."
