Chapter 20: Wyoming Again
My father had set the place the way he said he would.
On Thanksgiving afternoon, the ranch kitchen table held three plates and a pie from the neighbor.
There was a hand-lettered card in front of the third chair.
The card said "Son."
I had been home for six hours.
Rhodes had been home for six hours too, in the borrowed boots.
In that time he had fed eleven horses, split a cord of kindling and been told he held the axe wrong.
I found them at four, out past the south shed, at the fence line.
The sky was white.
The snow came sideways.
They stood with their backs to me, two men looking at my mother's pasture.
I stopped in the lee of the shed to give them their talk.
I know it's not polite.
I'm also from a place where the wind carries everything.
"I drove out on the twelfth," Rhodes said. "I didn't tell her."
"I know. I opened the gate."
"I came to give you the letter in person. I thought you should hear it from me, not a bank."
"And I told you I'd take it from the bank, and you could drive back the way you came."
"You did."
"Then you fixed my fence," my father said.
I looked.
A long length of the south fence, a hundred yards of it, stood with new posts and tight wire.
