Chapter 5: Her File
The meeting was in the basement break room, under a flickering light, with thirty tired people in gray smocks.
Rhoda stood by the coffee urn with her arms crossed.
She had a mint in her cheek and the face of a woman who knew what was coming.
At 8:45 exactly, Simone walked in with a remote control and a folder.
She wore a different cream suit.
I wondered how many she owned and whether any had ever been rained on.
"Good evening," she said. "Thank you for coming. I won't take long."
She clicked the remote.
A slide came up on the wall.
It said, in plain black letters, "SECURITY REVIEW: NEW HIRES."
My stomach dropped through the floor and kept going.
"Hargrove Media takes the safety of its executives seriously," Simone said. "We recently completed a background review of all recent additions to the night crew."
She clicked again.
There was my name.
"Willa Cartwright. Age twenty-four. Pinedale, Wyoming."
There was a scanned page from a sheriff's office, with a date five years old.
"Disorderly conduct. Assault. A man's nose was broken in a bar fight, and the police report calls the suspect, quote, 'a large female.'"
Somebody in the back said, "Damn."
Somebody else laughed, and was shushed.
I stood very still with my hands at my sides.
Simone turned to look at me with soft, sorrowful blue eyes.
"I'm sure you understand, Miss Cartwright, why the company has concerns about someone with a violent history working alone near executive offices."
