Chapter 6: Amos Wakes

The forty-fourth floor at midnight was a cathedral with the lights off.

I pushed my cart down a hall of dark glass, past a wall of framed magazine covers, to a pair of tall doors.

They were open.

The big office behind them was empty.

No Rhodes, no Simone, no trap.

There was a desk and a couch that cost more than my truck.

On the desk stood one framed photograph, of a boy of about nine in a too-big blazer, holding the hand of a laughing old man.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

"Come to the hospital," Rhodes said. His voice was cracked down the middle. "He's awake. He's asking for the girl who counted."

"I'm on the clock."

"Please."

I looked at the cart.

I looked at the dark glass and thought about a woman in cream who had told me she'd make sure he was there.

She had been wrong.

Something must have pulled him away.

Rhoda stood in the elevator door with her coat already on.

"Go," she said. "I'll tell them the floor is done."

"You don't know..."

"I know your face, kid. Go."

The ICU was a hallway of beeping at one in the morning.

A nurse at the desk had my name already.

"Mrs. Hargrove," she said, and printed a sticker, and slapped it on my smock.

"I'm not..." I said, and then, "Thank you."

Rhodes was waiting outside the glass room.
