Chapter 13: Stopped Between Floors
Ten minutes to five, and two hundred people were still staring at the woman who had just ordered a lender out of his own building.
Terrell smiled at me and did not move.
"Mrs. Kellum," he said. "You have a decree pinned to a curtain that says otherwise."
"Then it's a good thing I don't need your opinion," I said.
I did not wait to hear what he said back.
I took Levi by the tie and walked him across the marble.
We passed the fern, the guard, and the banner that said Heart Fund Children's Wing.
Nobody stopped us.
Behind the empty reception desk was a steel door marked SERVICE.
I hit the button with the flat of my hand.
The freight lift came down slowly and opened on a bare steel box hung with gray moving blankets.
I pulled him in, pressed twelve, and when the floor had dropped away under us I slapped the red stop button.
The whole car shuddered and went still.
A bell rang once, far away, and quit.
"Talk," I said.
"Reyna, it's ten to five."
"Talk."
He stood against the blankets with his hands open at his sides.
His gray suit hung off him and I could see everything it had been hiding.
"You signed," I said. "I sat in that courtroom for an hour and you didn't speak."
"I know."
"Not no. Not wait. Not Reyna, please. You signed it and you looked at the pen," I said.
"I know what I did."
"Why?"
"I had a reservation for the fourteenth," Levi said.
I stared at him.
"Last year. Seven o'clock, the little place on Cedar Springs where we had our first anniversary. I was going to tell you all of it over dinner."
