Chapter 17: The Lobby
Colin's POV
On Monday morning the director of the county engineering office asked me to come to her office and close the door.
She was a plain, tired woman who had never once raised her voice at a contractor, and she put a printout on her desk.
It was a screenshot of Reese's story from the week before.
The office's account was tagged under my name.
"We've had eleven calls," she said. "Two were from reporters. I don't care about your marriage, Colin. I care that a woman I've never met is telling the internet you work here."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"What do you want me to do?"
I opened my mouth, and a voice in the lobby said, "Excuse me."
Through the glass wall of her office I could see the front counter.
Gavin stood at it in his navy jacket, with a banker's box in his arms.
He had a visitor's badge clipped crookedly to his lapel, and the receptionist was staring at him.
"Is that your brother?" the director said.
"Yes."
"The brother."
"Yes."
She rose, and I followed her out.
The lobby had a dozen people in it, contractors waiting for permits, a woman with a roll of drawings, two of my own crew in boots.
Gavin set the box on the counter and turned to face the room.
"I'm sorry to take your time," he said. "My name is Gavin Roche. I'm here about Colin Tavish."
Everyone stopped.
"A few weeks ago a video of Colin was posted online with this office's name attached. I helped plan the thing it came from. I want to tell his employer that every word of it was a game, and that he did nothing wrong at work or anywhere else."
