Chapter 15: Push Me, Then
Ciara's POV
Camille was already on the dock when I walked down to it, with her back to me and her hands in the pockets of a long cream coat.
She had wrapped her hair under a scarf so it would not show blonde against the dusk.
Edmund's little digital recorder sat in my sleeve, against my scar, with the red light taped over.
Anthony's car was still at the gate. I had seen the headlights go out an hour ago and had not let myself look again.
"You came," Camille said without turning.
"You said you had something Edmund never told me."
"I lied." She faced me then, and the lake wind moved her scarf. "I wanted you on the dock."
"Why?"
"Because it's the only place you ever listen to me."
The planks creaked under us.
The water below was black and flat, the same water I had gone into at twenty-two, and my mouth tasted of cold.
"Say what you want, Cam."
"I want to make you an offer." She took an envelope from her coat and held it out. "A cashier's check, half of everything I'll marry into, and a ticket. Lisbon, Madrid, anywhere you choose. You stay dead in Europe. You're a nurse, you'll get work."
"Half of the Kensington money."
"Half of what I can reach. Our mother is dead and her debts are paid, and I'm the only one left who can write you a check."
"The trust paid those debts."
"Because I smiled at Constance at the right luncheon." Her voice stayed soft and reasonable. "You don't smile at luncheons, Ciara. You never learned."
