Chapter 12: Page Six
Colin looked down at the pages without touching them.
Gerald's chair scraped back.
"Colin," he said. "Don't read that. It's private. It's a family matter."
"Is it?" said the man with the white mustache.
Gerald stopped.
Colin turned the stack over and found page six.
It was a photograph of a letter on thick cream paper, with a hospital crest at the top.
He began to read, silently at first.
Angie watched his eyes move down the page.
She saw the exact line where they stopped and went back to the top and started again.
"Read it out," said someone from the middle of the table.
Colin's voice, when it came, was rough.
"Your children must be tested," he read.
Nobody breathed.
His eyes went to the bottom of the page, to the line of heavy blue handwriting.
His lips moved over it once, without sound.
He looked up.
Then he looked at his father, who had signed every school form in that same heavy blue ink.
"Dad."
"It was a misunderstanding," Gerald said. "That woman didn't know the family."
"You wrote it."
"Colin..."
"You wrote it," Colin said again, and his voice rose. "You told me for nineteen years that Angie killed Mom. I was five years old. You sat me down in the study when I was eleven and told me she was why I didn't have a mother. And Mom had a disease. My own mother died of it, and you knew we could both have it."
Gerald's mouth moved.
"I was grieving."
"You were lying."
"I couldn't lose another one," Gerald said. "If I told you, you'd both be afraid. You'd be sick with it. I wanted you to grow up whole."
