Chapter 15: Sunday Pancakes
The lobby stayed silent after the glass doors swung shut.
Sixty people were looking at Colin, waiting for him to say she was a liar.
"She's right," he said.
A ripple went through the crowd.
"She kept quiet because I gave her a year of reasons to. That part belongs to me."
He turned to the woman at the reception desk.
"Cancel my week," he said. "Anything that's not a payroll deadline."
Then he walked out through the same doors, and nobody said a word until the elevators started again.
On Sunday morning, someone knocked at the Lund apartment with an elbow.
Dixon opened the door, and Colin stood there holding four grocery bags and a cast iron pan.
He wore a plain grey sweater and no coat, and he looked tired in a new way.
"I called first," Colin said. "Nobody picked up."
"It's seven-fifty."
"She said she gets up early."
"She said she gets up early because of the pain," Dixon said. "You're not supposed to take that as an invitation."
"Let him in," Angie called.
